SHELBY STARTS HIS OWN FAN CLUB

After more than a quarter century, the Shelby Club has lost its name, sort of.

Shelby Auto’s president, Amy Boylan, as of Feb., 2008, has cancelled permission for the Shelby American Automobile Club to be an authorized official club for Shelby.

The marketing chief, Ms. Boylan wrote in an e-mail posted on a website Club Cobra Nov. 1st “The SAAC team will still continue with what they do, we have not renewed the Shelby License, but I am sure they will continue with the registry. We at Shelby will also keep the registry for all new cars and old, if the owners of Cobra and vintage Mustangs want to join.”

The Shelby Club Registry (SAAC), edited in part by such experts as Ned Scudder and Jeff Burgy, has been a source of good information for car dealers and collectors, who try to separate the wheat from the chaff, as there are several fake CSX 3000 Cobras and no doubt even more fake GT350s. Their new Registry is expected in 2008 and will be a massive tome that you will need to shore up your coffee table just to hold.

The SAAC also published a magazine, The Shelby American, but with frequent irregularity, which no doubt irritated Shelby’s marketing chief, who realizes you can hardly plan an ad campaign if you don’t have a publication date. Accordingly the new club, called Team Shelby, already has a magazine, called appropriately enough SHELBY.

The new club has a website, http://www.teamshelby.com and two experts on hand to run the club, recruited from a club called the S197 Shelby Owners Association.

The new club plans to document the newly made Shelby cars. Ms. Boylan said “, SAAC does not have the GT-H or the Shelby GT info, that has always been ours, as with all cars going forward.”
